The New Wisdom

I’m getting really, really worried about this layoff. The fact that I won’t be getting money kinda sucks, but it’s not too big a deal since I have money saved (but not as much as I wanted). What really concerns me is the lack of health insurance. I’ve been so stupid. I should have been going to the doctor as often as possible while I could. Should’ve made an appointment with the dentist as soon as I started work (I finally called them a couple months ago and got an appointment for July 10; bastards!). Should’ve seen a dermatologist earlier. Should’ve gotten my blood test earlier so the doctor would have time to go over it. About the only thing I did right was make good use of my vision plan. I’m going to call around tomorrow to see if I can get some doctors to squeeze me in next week. I’ll tell the truth: I’m getting laid off and I need to see them NOW! It’s not life or death, but it’s just been plain idiocy for me not to have done these things. I’m glad I learned this now, at 22, rather than later. I’m still a fucking moron, though. Should’ve bought a cheaper car too. Should’ve been more frugal overall. Grrrr! I hate myself!

So anyway, now my big political crusade is for universal health care, or at least some kind of assistance. 41 million Americans are uninsured! That’s insanity in anybody’s book. Dick Gephardt wants to spend $700 billion in the first 3 years of his plan to provide coverage for all Americans. I don’t know enough about health insurance or his plan to know if it could work, but I do know that universal coverage is worth that kind of price. Too bad we’ll never see anything resembling that under the Bush administration. ChrisV82 of Plinko posted a link to a neat comic. I’ve put a piece of it below (cut to save space):
