The New Wisdom

Don’t be a CS major

The scarcity of the American programmer is increasing with IBM’s move of 4,700 tech jobs to Asia. As is often the case, insult is added to injury:

Often, the American workers being replaced are called upon to train their overseas replacements. The same will be expected of IBM employees whose jobs are being transferred, according to the Journal.

On the plus side,

[IBM spokesman] Sciales also released a statement saying IBM expects hiring in the United States next year will match or exceed 2003 levels.

But of course, that doesn’t make the 4,700 people who are about to lose their jobs feel any better. Obviously, I’m worried. I think I need to find a new field to work in, because pretty much everyone is saying that programming is the new manufacturing, software houses are the new factories.
