Trek Convention and Asian Empowerment
Published by Duc August 23rd, 2004 in Entertainment, NerderyWhat is the quintessential nerdfest? That’s right. A Star Trek convention. I have no shame in admitting that I’ve always been a huge Star Trek fan. I’m not as into it as I was when I was younger, but I’ve been renting the Deep Space 9 DVDs from Netflix lately and I’m falling back in love. DS9 is my favorite Trek series, followed closely by The Next Generation.
So I’ve wanted to go to a Trek convention since I was a kid. There was never one nearby, though. Just a couple months ago I had the inexplicable urge to search for Star Trek conventions in Google. That’s where I found this: http://www.creationent.com. Not only did I find a convention nearby, it was very close, right in Cherry Hill! Now that I live in Mt. Laurel, it’s just a hop and a skip away.
The problem is that William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy will be in attendance, as will Robert Picardo (doctor from Voyager). They’re fine, but who I really want to see are people from DS9 or TNG. Nevertheless, Brian and I are splurging on the “Gold Package”, which gives us front-row seating during the Shatner and Nimoy talks, autographs with both, and a bunch of other stuff. This is my first Trek convention, so I figure I’d go all out.
In other news, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle was pretty funny. One scene, which almost makes the movie IMO, features Kumar with a large bag of marijuana with visions of their future together. It was f-ing hilarious. I like that the movie featured great staples of New Jersey life, like the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. The White Castle they seek is in Cherry Hill, which was cool, but I can assure you Cherry Hill does not look like that.
Anyway, I think we can all agree that portraying Asians as pot-smoking adventurers can only be positive for us. Never mind that nearly every Asian stereotype applies to me. This movie has given me the strength to stand up to any white guys who want to offload their work on me.
