I don’t listen to FM radio much ever since I got Sirius satellite radio for Christmas, but NPR is better on FM (I believe the terrestrial stations have a deal with NPR to keep Morning Edition and All Things Considered off Sirius) and I still like to check in on some stations once in a while, especially 100.3 (Y100).
Well, on my way to a coworker’s goodbye lunch today (bye, Chris; enjoy that bigger paycheck!) I was puzzled to hear Ludacris’ Get Back playing on Y100. Puzzlement turned to horror as the station identified itself as 100.3 The Beat.
What. The. FUCK.
So after lunch I jump online to find out what the hell happened. Looks like Y100’s owner, Radio One, flipped formats:

For the second time, by the same company, Philadelphia is now left without an alternative rock station. Probably the only major city to be without one. Now again, I listen mainly to Sirius these days, but still: this is an outrage. I was a big fan of the DJs, especially Electra. She was funny.
Fuck you Radio One. You have added one more nail to FM’s coffin. It’s likely some other station will take on the modern rock format, but we’ve still lost something that I very closely associated with Philadelphia. They organized numerous concerts and their Sonic Sessions were awesome. Someone will pay for this!
There’s a website dedicated to saving and remembering Y100. Check it out:
