Plea For Help
I posted this in a few newsgroups. Please contact me if you can help:

My router is a Linksys BEFW11S4. I'm trying to get a WUSB11 Wireless USB Network Adapter on a Windows 2000 machine to talk to the network.

I tested it with my Windows XP laptop and it connected without a hitch. I'm convinced that a big part of this is the fact that XP has wireless connectivity built in and that Linksys' WLAN Monitor software is part of why this won't work on my Win2K machine.

I know this computer can see the router because the Linksys software correctly shows the router's MAC address, SSID, channel, etc. and lists the status as "Connected". The software says, "You are connected to the access point, but
the Internet cannot be found".

I've tried DHCP, but even though the router shows that it assigns the computer an IP within the DHCP range (192.168.1.106), the computer thinks it's getting something like 169.254.145.210. What actually happens is that when I first log on the computer actually WILL have the 192.168.1.106 address, but within minutes will automatically switch to the 169 address. At this point the router will still think the Win2K machine is at 192.168.1.106.

Then I tried setting a static IP (192.168.1.50) and manually setting the gateway and DNS servers. Still no luck. I can't even ping the router (transmit failed, error code 65).

With either DHCP or a static IP, when I "View workgroup computers" on my XP laptop, I see the Win2000 computer (but can't connect to it). If I ping "neo" (the name of the Win2000 PC) from the XP computer the IP address will be resolved properly, but again, no reply.

I'm at a loss. Your suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Wireless Network Update
I finally replaced my Asanté AeroLAN AL1511 wireless PC card with a Linksys WPC11. The damned Asante card wouldn't connect to the network if I enabled WEP. It also would cut the connection periodically when I was upstairs in my house. In short, it sucked. The new Linksys one was more expensive at $40, but the improved reliability is already worth it.

I was trying to get the wireless USB adapter to work on my Win98 machine, but it just won't work. As I write this I'm installing Windows 2000 on it, in hope that that will do the trick. It might eventually be a Linux box (I'll have to get a new hard drive first) but for now it can be a Windows machine. I want some of the files off of that computer.

Hardy Party Part 1
It's 5:30 AM. Hardy's birthday party was tonight. I drove all the way home from Mount Laurel. I am tired.

There was this cool guy there (I think his name was Jeff) that got me all riled up about not having to take crap from others. He made a bunch of inaccurate assumptions, but I didn't correct him, because the stuff he said could apply to other stuff too. I think he likened me to a Peter Parker type figure, someone who may be nerdy and small (physically and socially), but vows to one day show the world what he's really made of. I kinda do feel that way. I kinda always have. There's a lot of appeal in hoping that someday you'll make people sorry they ignored you or didn't respect you. Maybe that day will come for me, but probably not. In the meantime, I need to do what I can to not irrationally invest my emotional capital in things that have no promise of return.

Anyway, some pictures of the party will be up later today! After a brief sleep.

Screwed at work again
I just started coding last Friday and I thought I had at least a couple weeks to finish. But I don't! Apparently I was supposed to have been done already. I feel like a moron. It's OK, though. They can fire me, but they can't take our freeedoooom!!! Plus my review was just a week ago. A little more time would be good.

RU Trip
Since Monday was my dad's birthday, my parents and I went to Rutgers on Sunday so the family could have dinner together (but not before getting an awesome picture of a mushroom; see below). We went to a place in South Plainfield called Pho 99. I wasn't all that impressed with the food, plus the waiter spilled some pho broth on my dad. Not cool! Plus, when we ordered soybean drink they had the "Vietnamese style" which was green. It doesn't taste quite the same as the stuff we're used to. The color didn't help at all either.

Still, it was nice to see everyone. Vu showed us all around campus and identified some buildings that in my 4 years at Rutgers I never knew the names of.

Happy birthday, Dad!

I want a digital camera NOW...
I still can't choose between the Casio Exilim EX-Z3 and the Canon PowerShot S400 (see below). I can have the Casio for $334.10 and the Canon for $424.10. The S400 is obviously better, but is it $90 better? IS IT?!?!?!?!?!?!

Mushroom!
There are several large mushrooms in my back yard. I'm not sure how they got there, since I didn't think it rained all that much last week, but they're pretty cool. The largest was over 5 inches in diameter. It's pretty cool looking. Check it out!

This is one of my first tries with my dad's camera's macro mode.

Underworld
Saw Underworld with Cat and Jon yesterday. I was surprised at how entertaining it was. Catherine wanted to see it because Scott Speedman was a co-star, but even she ended up liking the action and the surprisingly interesting storyline. The movie left itself wide open for a sequel.

Today I visited Melissa briefly and went shopping with Cat and Jon. One of the guys at Banana Republic asked me about the dress code at work. I felt so damn old! It's not like he needed extensive deduction skills to figure out I was buying work clothing, but I've never been asked that before. It felt strange.

Once I got back to Galloway I dropped some things off at Mike's house. Now here I am, trying to find a cheap way to buy a Canon S400.

Hurricane, Shmurricane
Since McGreevy ordered a state of emergency at 4:00 today, some of us at work decided to leave early. It's OK because I worked an extra 3 hours last week. Hurricane Isabel isn't affecting us much at all, though. Barely any rain in Mt. Laurel. Pretty windy, though. Doesn't look like much rain near the shore either. Just a higher tide.

So yesterday's detailed design review didn't go too badly. Most of the action items were for stupid standards-compliance issues. I'm not sure how much work was put into reviewing the actual logic of the test, but there wasn't a lot said about that so I'm hoping I'm OK.

So the new season of Survivor (Pearl Islands - Panama) started tonight. The commercials made it seem much more terrible for the contestants, but before they kicked everyone off the boat with nothing but the clothes on their back, Jeff Probst gave each tribe a bag of money and the knowledge that there was a small village nearby. They could buy pretty much whatever they needed. The one tribe, which was much more organized and team-like than the other, made out like bandits. They did far better than tribes past, I think. It's a cool cast. Should be neat.

70000!
I didn't start my car AT ALL this weekend, so I didn't put on any extra miles. Woo! But this morning I did finally surpass 70,000 miles. That's 14,300 miles since I got the car 9 months ago.

Since I spend so much time in the car I've decided to stock up on some extra amenities. I had a $25 Amazon gift certificate so I ordered the HoMedics LSS-10H Back Masseur 10-Motor Back Massager with Heat. Only $30 out of pocket. Cat's got something similar and I think it'll be great in the car. I'm also going to get some kind of car cooler/warmer chest. Not necessarily the one I linked to, but similar.

With the stereo headunit and all 4 speakers already replaced, that leaves only an amplifier and a subwoofer. With all the time I spend in the car, I think I deserve them! Eventually...

Guestbook!
The guestbook has finally been set up. I was going to make my own, but I'm just too lazy. Probably ended up being nearly as much work getting this god-forsaken premade guestbook to integrate into my site as it would've been developing my own, but it's pretty full-featured. Enjoy!

A visit to RU

Here's me in the back seat as my dad drives. I'm reprogramming parts of the guestbook on my laptop! I was online at 70 mph. My cell phone kicks ass.

My parents wanted to visit my brother and sister at Rutgers today, so I came with them. We stopped at Quynh's dorm room briefly to bring her some stuff, and then once we decided to hit this Vietnamese place in the area that we hadn't tried yet (Anh Dao) I gave Melissa a call and invited her to come along with us. So we had dinner, which wasn't too bad, and I drove us back home. Not a particularly long trip.

My parents are worried about Quynh, but I have faith she'll be all right. Takes time to figure out what you like, so there's no rush as far as I'm concerned.

Which digital camera?

Canon S400, Casio Exilim EX-Z3, and Pentax Optio S

I think I've narrowed down my digital camera choices to the Canon PowerShot S400 and the Casio Exilim EX-Z3. My brother recommended the M2, which plays MP3s, but I don't think I care too much about music capabilities. I do want optical zoom and I do want smallness, though. Another option of course is the Pentax Optio S, which fits in an Altoids tin! That would be a cheap, yet really cool case. The Casio Z3 uses Pentax's lens. They're all decently reviewed. I just don't know if I want to spend more money on the Canon, or if the Canon's extra 5 mm depth and 76 g (which is 52% heavier than the Casio!) will discourage me from bringing the camera with me. I want something I can take EVERYWHERE.

Suggestions are appreciated!

Act IV 2003 Shortlist Profiles- Noah Daleo

I was searching for Catherine with Google (I was trying to find our CS428 projects and the site comes up with her name earlier than it does with mine) and I found that site up there. It's Cat's friend Noah. Apparently he'll be playing at this concert at the Metro in Chicago! According to the website they're having some troubles, but the concert should work out. Good for him, I say. Good work indeed, Noah!

It's almost lunchtime. I've done almost no work today. I can't help it! It's Friday and I'm sick and tired of doing this craptastic "design". Thing is, I do have plenty to do left.

Right now I'm more focused on finding a good deal on a Canon S400 or an A70 or something. I want a digital camera. I also want to redesign the site. This template from Blogger is OK, but a little more originality would be nice. And speaking of Blogger, I'm still wondering if I should move to MovableType. It's better in almost every way, but it would probably be a lot of work to move the posts over and customize it so it works the same way the site currently works. I'm too lazy. It'll be a while before I move over.

Went to the driving range today. I suck ass at golf. Justin tried pretty hard to help me, but as he said, I'm "unteachable". I'll keep practicing, since I find it fun, but it's starting to bother me that I suck so much.

Went to Rutgers this weekend. My car has another 258 miles on it. Melissa, Matt, Jon and I went to dinner at Jonny Carino's on Saturday, and then we went to Jon's apartment and talked about random things for a few hours. Then Melissa and I watched Identity (John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Ray Liotta), which Jon had kindly lent us. I didn't like it all that much.

Then on Sunday we sat around and watched TV, went to Fuddruckers with Matt, Kristen and my sister, and then I headed to Jon's place to show him the Rogue Squadron III demo and Soul Calibur II. And now I'm home!

I have to be asleep in like 15 minutes. I need to come in to work at 7 again.

This is what I look like:

Not sure if that's a good picture or not. Probably NOT. But that's OK.

So I'm going to Rutgers tomorrow (i.e., today). I think I'll be cool like Chris E. from work and take lots of pictures.

I was a recorder for the code walkthrough review today. It was 2 and a half hours long and mostly filled with pretty trivial issues. And one of the reviews was actually cancelled! It could've been almost twice as long.

It stands to reason that when I'm at the happiest that I've been in a long time, things should arise to bring in change. It's OK. I'm always happy. It's just that I could be happier.

I got to work at 7 today so I could finish my junk in time for my pre-review. It's now 7:37 and I've done nothing. I screw around for this amount of time every morning, though, so I'll still manage to get in more work time than usual. Still, I've only got a little over 5 hours to get this shiznit done!

Also, Anand emailed me last night. DucLink is working perfectly! Greg emailed me a couple months ago and so did this guy who knew Cuong. Now if only some hot girls would do the same... Anyway, if you're reading this, Anand, I'll write you back when I'm not screwed at work. Nice to hear from you!

This is so amazing. Weird coincidence, I tell ya. I still have Karen, a girl in one of the CS416 sections I TAed, on my buddy list and I had noticed her profile said she was living in Maple Shade. I kept forgetting to mention to her that I work really near there, but seeing her online today reminded me.

I never put 2 and 2 together. She had told me before graduating she was going to work for Lockheed. And her profile said she was in Maple Shade. I should have figured out that the Lockheed in question was the Lockheed we contract to for Aegis. But I didn't think about it until I started talking to her! Turns out she's working somewhat close to the Lockheed complex on Marter Ave. and we're both doing Aegis stuff! Funky. Here's an excerpt to show how weird this is:
Duc1701 (1:17:05 PM): This is pretty cool. We're both on Navy work.
SilverDawn3 (1:17:48 PM): haa haa yeah
SilverDawn3 (1:17:48 PM): I work on software that testes the ships hardware
SilverDawn3 (1:17:48 PM)
: its called ORTS
Duc1701 (1:18:29 PM)
: Ha! My piece (ETF, part of the SPY radar) gets initiated by ORTS!
SilverDawn3 (1:18:37 PM): LMAO
SilverDawn3 (1:18:43 PM): haa haa haa
SilverDawn3 (1:18:50 PM)
: this is hilarious
SilverDawn3 (1:18:57 PM)
: I can't believe it

So we're having lunch Wednesday with some of her coworkers. I'll try to drag Cat along. I forgot to ask her how her boyfriend Jimmy is doing (he was also in my class) but we can catch up on that at lunch. Oh, she also needs a roommate for her place and asked if I was looking. It's a 2-story townhouse, 2 beds, 2 baths. Sounds pretty cool. Hopefully I can check it out soon.

I borrowed Justin's extra clubs when we went golfing and lost one of the headcovers (the one for the 1 wood). I went out today looking for one to replace it, or a set if necessary, but I couldn't find one that was the same type. I don't want that knit thingy at the bottom. His don't have that.

I woke up at 10 today with the goal of doing 4 simple things: 1.) buy Justin new club headcovers, 2.) finish my laundry, 3.) return movie to Blockbuster, and 4.) vacuum the house. I only accomplished #3 and #4 and it's now 1 AM. Not good.
